Design Process
1. Client Interview/Site Analysis
This first phase consists of making a basic map of the property and cataloging existing conditions. During this phase an intensive consultation with the client gives me information as to what they envision for their dream garden. Whether it be reading, veggie gardening or playing bochi ball, there are many design elements that can inhibit or enhance one’s lifestyle!
As a Site Analysis is made, existing troublesome areas in the landscape are noted, micro-climates are detected, sun and wind patterns are noted as well as run-off and rainwater issues. The list goes on and on, and is extremely place sensitive.
2. Conceptual Design

In the conceptual design phase I will take all of the collective information from the client, map services, county and city, and the vernacular to create two or three conceptual designs.
These designs are completely malleable. During a meeting with the client, we will pick and choose from the designs to make a master plan.
3. The Master Plan

This phase gives a more concrete definition of the plan. The level of detail is much higher than in the conceptual designs. Plants are called out, specific areas are blown up and detailed. Materials are chosen and called out. I can make colorful renditions for the client, or stick with basic black and white for the construction document. From here, a contractor is chosen and we are ready to begin installation!

4. Continued Involvement
At this point, I am happy to assist the contractor in plant placement and overseeing the project. Sometimes I am not needed for installation. At best, the client is slowly phasing the garden in, maybe even planting it themselves over a few years! If you’d like, I can assist the client planting for a day to show correct planting techniques. I would also love to come and show you how to maintain your garden. I thoroughly believe this is an important step missing from design! Too many gardens go unmaintained because clients are left without guidance.
